We are inundated daily with advice from experts (and so-called experts) on how we should eat. It is hard to understand what information is correct and what information is just selling something to consumers. We are told that certain foods are good and other foods are bad. Then, there are all of the diets that guarantee better health. It is not surprising that the information overload drives people to simply throw up their hands when implementing a healthy diet. I frequently tell clients that understanding how to eat in our media driven world is extremely challenging.
One simple habit has consistently shown real, achievable benefits for health, energy, and overall wellness: tracking the food you eat.
Food tracking isn’t about perfection or restriction—it’s about awareness. Whether you’re jotting notes in a journal, using an app, or snapping photos of your meals, bringing mindfulness to what you eat can spark changes that feel empowering rather than overwhelming.
Feeling overwhelmed by all the conflicting nutrition advice? You don’t have to navigate it alone. Our wellness coaching services, including individual nutrition coaching plans and group wellness programs, help you build healthy eating habits, track your meals mindfully, and create lasting changes for your mind, body, and spirit.
Here are some ways food tracking can transform your wellness journey.
1. It Connects Food to Your Bodily Functions
Eating tends to be more of something that we just do without much thought. When we are not aware of what “fuel” we are putting in our bodies, we are most likely not aware of how that “fuel” connects to our bodies function. Here are a couple of examples:
- Feeling more fatigued? Maybe it is something that you are eating or something that you are missing in your diet. A high protein and carbohydrate meal can increase fatigue (Ever taken a nap after that Thanksgiving turkey and dressing?).
- More constipated? You may be lacking in the fiber or hydration department. Or, you may enjoy cheese a bit too much.
- Cold hands, muscular cramps or brittle nails? You may need to boost your intake of foods rich in specific vitamins and minerals.
Bottom line: As a car cannot run on bad fuel, our bodies also cannot run on bad “fuel”.
2. It Strengthens Your Relationship With Food
Technically, this could go under connecting food to your bodily functions, but I feel like this one needs its own category. We have made progress on the mind/body connection, however, we have a long way to go. Our emotional and mental health are closely tied to the foods we choose. Tracking our food intake helps you understand why you eat what you eat. It identifies ways that your mood and emotions impact your food choices. It is not just about the numbers. You may notice that you tend to reach for food when you are bored and not necessarily hungry. Or, you find comfort in food when you are down or anxious. Mood and food are closely linked, so intuitively tracking these together is a great way to strengthen the mind/body connection.
3. It Highlights Nutrient Gaps
Think you get an A+ in your daily protein intake? You may be surprised to find out that you are severely lacking in that department after logging your food intake for a few days. Some of the typical things my clients have noticed when they begin tracking food is:
- Low fiber
- Minimal fruits and veggies
- Colorless diet
- Low on protein
- High sodium or sugar foods you didn’t notice
Once you see where the gaps are, you can begin tweaking your choices.
4. It Promotes Accountability-without the judgement
Tracking your food is not about labeling foods good or bad. It is simply a way of gathering data. We will all indulge at times (as we all should!). Food logging just helps to keep your overall goal and intentions top-of-mind.
Research shows that people who track their intake, even occasionally, are more likely to stick with healthy habits long-term.
Even better: You don’t have to track forever. Many people use it short-term to build skills and awareness that last for life.
