Goal setting is a key part of progressing on your wellness journey. It creates clear direction and focus, and increases motivation and drive. Unfortunately, when we do not set realistic goals, frustration, disappointment and burnout can set in. True wellness isn’t about perfection-it’s about creating healthy habits that support your mind, body and spirit over time. As I always tell clients, sometimes we need to start with baby steps. Baby steps create momentum, which makes it easier to stay motivated and committed. When it comes to your wellness journey, think of it as a marathon and not a sprint. The healthiest changes happen gradually and become part of your lifestyle rather than a temporary challenge.
The first step of setting realistic goals is to acknowledge and accept your starting point. If one of your goals is to exercise 5 days a week, but you have never consistently exercised, then start with exercising 1-2 days per week. Allow that regimen to become consistent, then begin to add more days to your regimen. This will take more time, but is more likely to last and become a part of your regimen. Or if your goal is to eliminate all processed foods from your diet, start with adding one more serving of vegetables to each meal. Sometimes adding what you need and then slowly eliminating what you want to avoid can be a way of achieving lasting results.
Life Happens. Be Flexible with Yourself
Busy schedules, unexpected challenges, and changing priorities can interrupt even the best plans. Rather than viewing setbacks as failures, see them as opportunities to adjust and continue moving forward. The key is to build a foundation to fall back on when life happens. This is best done when you set small, realistic goals.
Progress isn’t linear. Some days you’ll feel energized and motivated; other days simply showing up is enough. Give yourself permission to adapt without giving up.
Celebrate Every Win and Avoid Focusing on Perfection
Every healthy choice or win deserves recognition, small and large. Celebrating small victories reinforces positive habits and reminds you that progress is happening, even when it feels slow. Perfection is an impossible standard that can rob us of joy. Wellness isn’t about doing everything perfectly—it’s about making choices that support your health more often than not.
Remember, every healthy habit starts with a single choice. You don’t have to change your entire life today—you simply need to take the next achievable step.
Your wellness journey is uniquely yours. Move at your own pace, celebrate your progress, and trust that small, intentional actions will lead to lasting transformation. The goal isn’t to be perfect; the goal is to become healthier, happier, and more balanced one day at a time.
