The Importance of Community: Why We Need Each Other More Than Ever

Oct 10, 2025Wellness

In a world that often emphasizes independence and self-sufficiency, it’s easy to forget one simple truth: we thrive in connection. Community—whether it’s formed through neighborhoods, shared interests, workplaces, or even online platforms—remains one of the most essential elements of a fulfilling human life.  Unfortunately, data shows community connections have decreased and have become less supportive.  In 1985 American adults had an average of three confidants, but by 2004, the average decreased to two.*  When we spend less time in community, loneliness begins to creep into our lives.  Loneliness is the feeling of isolation, and it can occur even when surrounded by people.  It is a signal that we are not getting the social interaction that we need.  Loneliness not only increases the prevalence of anxiety and depression, it can also increase a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and dementia.

Feeling disconnected? Building meaningful connections starts with small, intentional steps—and the right guidance can make all the difference. What Is Community and Why It Matters

Community can look different for each person, and the amount needed can also vary.   It may be a spouse that satisfies the need for intimacy, a co-worker to satisfy the need for intellectual stimulation or a spiritual group that helps grow faith.  Communities can also be seasonal, and may come into your life during a trying time and help provide the support and encouragement needed.  An introvert may need less connections to feel a sense of community when compared to an extrovert.

Community is about developing relationships and connections that help fulfill a need or purpose.  It creates a sense of belonging and strengthens empathy for self and others.  Communities foster a safe and trusting space, and help provide support and resilience in times of crisis.  And, as the data demonstrated earlier in this blog, it also promotes our physical and mental health.

How to Build and Nurture Community

  • Start small: Say hello to your neighbors. Attend a local event. Join a club or group that interests you.
  • Be present: Show up consistently. Trust and connection grow over time.
  • Be patient: It takes time for connections to develop.  Enjoy the process!
  • Be open: Diversity and different thoughts and beliefs can open your mind and create a more inquisitive attitude.  It is okay to agree to disagree.
  • There is a time to talk…and a time to listen.  Listening causes us to tune into others needs, and better understand each other.
  • Allow others to serve you.  If you are always the one providing for others and not accepting help, then you are preventing your community from providing acts of service and kindness.  It is okay to ask for help-stronger bonds are formed!
  • Use technology mindfully: Online platforms can be powerful tools for connection—but like any tool, they’re best when used to foster real relationships, not replace them.
